MOVIE REVIEW - SAW VI

MOVIE REVIEW SAW VI
The Saw franchise has slowly become the horror version of soap opera. Full of plot twists and clues in each film ensuring fans pay attention, this Grand Guignol serial shows no sign of ending. This may seem nauseating for some, although remarkably SawVI is one of the better sequels. Mainly due to better writing and tight direction, this bloody addition shows death can be evil's potent aphrodisiac. Continuing the warped sense of justice Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) has imbedded in him, Lt. Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) sets his sights further. His latest target is crooked insurance executive William (Peter Outerbridge) who has a past connection to Jigsaw. Using his instruments of terror against him, Hoffman delights in the new traps he creates. A new and unexpected player enters the fray - Jill (Betsy Russell), Jigsaw's wife. Holding her own dark motives, her presence adds to the looming crisis for Hoffman as this black widow proves retribution and hate can be a hellish combination. After some pretty terrible efforts, Saw VI is a significant improvement. The gore and extreme sequences are still there but what makes this stand out are better characterisation and plot focus. This could be attributed to first time director Kevin Greutert, editor of the previous instalments. In his former role he would have seen what worked and has applied this aesthetic here. The acting is much better as well, with Bell, Mandylor and Russell making for an intriguing trio. This isn't to say that Saw VI is a work of art but nor should it be dismissed due to its bad reputation. In many ways the series is probably one of the most successful exploitation films made in terms of low budget and profitable returns. This isn't anything bad in movie business, with SawVI having the courage of its convictions in sticking with proven format while others have become watered down. It's this focus of its core concept making this outing fire with previously raised questions finally receiving satisfying answers and new ones setting the scene for the now inevitable future instalments. With production of Saw 7 & 8 just announced, it appears this never-ending saga will be around for quite awhile. On the evidence of Saw VI it seems to have found some new life in the old beast and it'll be interesting to see which bloody path this series will go next.
