BIRTHDAYS: 1985 - Lil' Fizz - an American rapper and actor. He was best known for being the youngest member of the boy band quartet, B2K. His debut album, Payday, was released on July 17, 2007 on iTunes as a digital download release. 1981 - Natasha Bedingfield - a Grammy Award-nominated British pop singer and songwriter. Bedingfield recorded her first album Unwritten in 2004. The album contained primarily uptempo pop songs and was influenced by R&B music. In 2007, she received a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" for the song "Unwritten". Bedingfield's second album N.B. (2007) yielded the singles "I Wanna Have Your Babies", "Soulmate" and "Say It Again". Bedingfield has achieved five top ten singles in the United Kingdom and has sold over 10 million singles and albums worldwide. 1938 - Tina Turner - an American singer and actress whose career has spanned more than 50 years winning numerous awards and her achievements in the rock music genre have earned her the title "The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll". Turner started out her music career with husband Ike Turner as a member of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue with a string of hits including "River Deep, Mountain High" and the 1971 hit "Proud Mary". Turner rebuilt her career, launching a string of hits beginning in 1983 with "Let's Stay Together" and the 1984 release of her album Private Dancer. Her musical career led to film roles, beginning with a prominent role as The Acid Queen in the 1975 film Tommy, and an appearance in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. She starred opposite Mel Gibson as Aunty Entity in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome for which she received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, and her version of the film's theme, "We Don't Need Another Hero", was a hit single. She appeared in the 1993 film Last Action Hero. The 1993 film ``What's Love Got to Do with It'' is based on Turner's life. 1922 - Charles M Schulz - The creator of Snoopy and the 'Peanuts' comic strip. OTHER EVENTS: 2008 – Baz Luhrman’s epic Australia commenced screening in Australia. Starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, Australia was set in northern Australia before World War II, an English aristocrat who inherits a sprawling ranch reluctantly pacts with a stock-man in order to protect her new property from a takeover plot. As the pair drive 2,000 head of cattle over unforgiving landscape, they experience the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by Japanese forces firsthand 2006 - Westlife went to No.1 on the UK album chart with 'The Love Album' the Irish boy bands sixth UK No.1 album. 2003 – Britney Spears tops the album charts with her much hyped In the Zone record. She becomes the first female artist in chart history to land four consecutive albums at No. 1. 2001 - Elton John, Cher and Donny Osmond perform for Queen Elizabeth at her Royal Variety Show in London 1998 – Tony Blair becomes the first Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to address the Republic of Ireland's parliament. 1994 - The Eagles started a two-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'Hell Freezes Over.' 1992 - The British government announced that Queen Elizabeth II had volunteered to start paying taxes on her personal income. She also took her children off the public payroll. 1991 - US Country singer Garth Brooks asked fans to bring 10 cans of food to a grocery store in exchange for a lottery envelope, some of which contained tickets to see Garth at a forthcoming show. Over 10,000 cans were donated to charity. 1990 - The inaugural Billboard Music Awards were held in Santa Monica, California. Janet Jackson was the main winner of the night, winning in eight categories, including Top Pop Album, Top R&B Album and Top R&B Artist. 1988 - George Michael moves to No. 5 in US with 'Kissing a Fool' and 'Faith' becomes first ever LP to yield six Top 5 singles 1987 – The Last Emperor starring John Lone and Peter O’Toole commenced screening in Australia. A group of Earth children help a stranded alien botanist return home. ET; The Extra Terrestrial won 4 Oscars. 1982 – UK No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “Truly,” Lionel Richie. The song is the first No. 1 hit for Richie since he left the Commodores. 1977 - 'The Sound Of Bread' by Bread went to No.1 on the UK album chart. 1966 - The Temptations "I'm Losing You" enters the R&B chart where it will become the group's fourth straight Number One. On the pop chart , the song peaks at #8. The tune will return in versions by Rare Earth in 1970 and Rod Stewart in 1971. 1962 - The Beatles recorded their second single ‘Please Please Me’ in 18 takes and ‘Ask Me Why’ for the flip side at EMI studio’s London. 1958 - Johnny Cash, made his debut on the US country chart when ’Cry! Cry! Cry!’ made it to number 14. His next seven singles would all make thecountry top 10, with ‘I Walk the Line’ and ‘There You Go’ both hitting number 1. 1950 – US No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: ``The Thing,'' Phil Harris. 1942 - The motion picture "Casablanca" had its world premiere at the Hollywood Theater in New York City. 1864 - Charles L. Dodgson (whose pen name is Lewis Carroll) sends a handwritten manuscript to 12-year-old Alice Liddel. The manuscript, titled "Alice's Adventures Underground" is an early Christmas present. The manuscript will later be renamed and published as "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass." 1855 - The British colony of Van Diemen's Land becomes known as Tasmania. 1832 - Public streetcar service began in New York City.
