BIRTHDAYS: 1982 - Lucas York Black - an American film and television actor. He is known for his roles in the CBS television series American Gothic as well as roles in films such as Sling Blade, Jarhead, Friday Night Lights, and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. 1976 - Anna Kay Faris - an American actress and singer known for her comic roles. Faris has appeared in the Scary Movie series of films, The Hot Chick (2002), Lost in Translation (2003), and My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006). In 2008, she had a starring role in The House Bunny, for which she earned an MTV Movie Awards nomination. 1968 - Jon Knight - an American singer. Along with his younger brother Jordan he is part of the musical group New Kids on the Block (NKOTB). The band also includes Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, and Danny Wood. Jonathan Knight is the oldest member of the group and was the first to leave the group in 1994 prior to their official disbanding. 1964 - Don Cheadle was nominated for an Oscar as the heroic hotel manager who sheltered refugees in the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda. Cheadle was already one of the busiest character actors of his era, appearing in movies such as Boogie Nights (1997, with Mark Wahlberg), Bulworth (1998, with Warren Beatty), Traffic (2000, with Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Swordfish (2001, with John Travolta). Cheadle started out in television in the early 1980s, picking up a regular role (1993-95) as district attorney John Littleton in the series Picket Fences. His breakout movie role was as the hair-trigger chum Mouse in the Denzel Washington film Devil in a Blue Dress (1995). Other movies include A Lesson Before Dying, Mission to Mars, Rush Hour 2, Ocean’s Eleven 1961 - Kim Delaney - an American actress, perhaps best known for her role as Detective Diane Russell on the ABC drama N.Y.P.D. Blue. Early in her career, she endeared herself to daytime television viewers as Jenny Gardner, in the ABC daytime drama All My Children. After All My Children, Delaney appeared in numerous television and film roles, including the sole female lead in the dramatic series Philly. A pair of fathers attempt to keep their summer camp afloat even though they are under dire economic strain. 2004 – Band Aid 20’s new version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” goes on sale in the UK. The song is performed by, among others, Bono, Paul McCartney, Travis, The Darkness, Coldplay, Robbie Williams and Dido. 2004 - Godzilla received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 2001 – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone started screening in Australia starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. Rescued from the outrageous neglect of his aunt and uncle, a young boy with a great destiny proves his worth while attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. 2000 – SoundScan announces that Backstreet Boys’ “Black & Blue” moved 1.59 million units in its first week. 1997 - Celine Dion went to No.1 on the UK album chart with 'Let's Talk About Love.' 1990 – Gulf War: The United Nations Security Council passes United Nations Security Council Resolution 678, authorizing "use all necessary means to uphold and implement" United Nations Security Council Resolution 660 "to restore international peace and security" if Iraq did not withdraw its forces from Kuwait and free all foreign hostages by January 15, 1991. 1987 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,Belinda Carlisle. A version of the song by the Undisputed Truth was released four months before the Temptations single but only reaches No. 63 on Chart Toppers’s Hot 100. 1963 - The Beatles' fifth British single "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is released. Advance orders exceed 700,000 and within three days, the record will have sold one million copies, making it their second million seller. 1962 - Brenda Lee's 'Rocking Around the Christmas Tree' hits UK chart 1961 - First U.S. animal to orbit the Earth: Enos, a 5-year-old chimpanzee, is launched aboard the Mercury-Atlas 5 satellite. He orbited the Earth twice and was recovered later in the day. 1959 - Bobby Darin is the winner of the 1959 Grammy Award for Record of the Year -- "Mack the Knife" -- and the Best New Artist of the Year. Frank Sinatra's "Come Dance With Me." is the Album of the Year. 1932 - The Gay Divorcee opened in New York City. The Cole Porter musical featured the classic, Night and Day. This is the trailer for the 1934 film adaptation of the Broadway show. 1929 - After completing his first flight over the North Pole on this same day in 1926, Lt. Commander Richard E. Byrd flew over the South Pole on this day. He became the first American to achieve such a feat.
