Exactly what does this mean?
Each level on the Richter Scale IS 10 time stronger then the previous level
1 Instrumental
2 Feeble
3 Slight
4 Moderate
5 Rather strong
6 Strong
7 Very Strong
8 Destructive
9 Ruinous
10 Disastrous
11 Very disastrous
12 Catastrophic
An Earthquake that southwest China in May 2008 was assessed as 8.0 on the Richter Scale.
Damage from a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that hit Niigata, Japan, in 1964.
Damage to a school in Anchorage, Alaska, caused by the 1964 Prince William Sound earthquake. The earthquake, which killed 131 people and caused $538 million of property damage, registered an 9.2 on the Richter Scale.
