BIRTHDAYS: 1981 - Britney Spears dance-pop singer: albums: Baby… One More Time, Oops!… I Did It Again; TV performer: The Mickey Mouse Club, Time Out with Britney Spears, Britney in Hawaii. Currently the centre of a lip-syncing controversy as part of Britney’s Australian Circus Tour. 1978 - Nelly Furtado - a Portuguese-Canadian singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress. She has sold over 18 million albums worldwide, and currently resides in Toronto. Furtado came to fame in 2000 with the release of her debut album Whoa, Nelly!, which featured her breakthrough Grammy Award-winning single "I'm Like a Bird". After becoming a mother and releasing the less commercially successful Folklore (2003), she returned to prominence in 2006 with the release of Loose and its hit singles "Promiscuous", "Maneater," "All Good Things (Come to an End)" and "Say It Right." 1968 - Lucy Liu - American actress - became known for her role in the television series Ally McBeal (1998–2002) as the vicious and ill mannered Ling Woo, and has also appeared in several notable film roles, including Charlie's Angels, Kill Bill and Kung Fu Panda. 1944 - Cathy Lee Crosby actress: Wonder Woman, World War III, Roughnecks, The Dark, Coach; TV host: That’s Incredible! 1946 - Gianni Versace - an Italian fashion designer and founder of Gianni Versace S.p.A., an international fashion house, which produces accessories, fragrances, makeup and home furnishings as well as clothes. He also designed costumes for the theatre and films, and was a friend of Elton John, Sting, and Princess Diana among many others. Openly gay, Versace and his companion Antonio D'Amico were regulars on the international party scene. OTHER EVENTS: 2004 – Starting to screen in Australia was Christmas with the Kranks starring Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis and Dan Akroyd. With their daughter away, her parents decide to skip Christmas altogether until she decides to come home, causing an uproar when they have to celebrate the holidays at the last minute. 2003 – Alicia Keys releases her second album The Diary of Alicia Keys, featuring the single “You Don’t Know My Name.” 2003 – The reunited Simon & Garfunkel perform at Madison Square Garden, their first New York date in 10 years. 2001 - Daniel Bedingfield scored his first UK No.1 single with 'Gotta Get Thru This', the single went back to No.1 in January 2002. The track was recorded in Bedingfield's bedroom with his PC and a microphone, using music software. 1999 – Crazy in Alabama starring Melanie Griffith, David Morse and Lucas Black starts screening in Australia. An abused wife heads to California to become a movie star while her nephew back in Alabama has to deal with a racially-motivated murder involving a corrupt sheriff. 1995 - Mariah Carey went to No.1 on the US singles chart with her duet with Boyz II Men 'One Sweet Day'. It made Carey the first artist in history to have two consecutive single debut at No.1, 'Fantasy' being her first. 1995 – The Guinness Book of World Records confirms that Ace of Base’s The Sign is the best-selling debut of all time, with 19 million copies sold. 1993 – Starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock, Demolition Man starts screening in Australia. A cop is brought out of suspended animation in prison to pursue an old ultra-violent enemy who is loose in a nonviolent future society. 1993 – Space Shuttle program: STS-61 – NASA launches the Space Shuttle Endeavour on a mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. 1979 - Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand's ‘You Don't Bring Me Flowers’ was at No.1 on the US singles chart. A radio station engineer had spliced together Neil's version with Barbra's version and got such good response, the station added it to their play list. When Neil Diamond was told about it, he decided to re-record the song with Streisand herself, and within weeks of its release, the single went to No.1 in the US and No.5 in the UK. 1979 - Stevie Wonder performs at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, performing material from his recent "Journey through the Secret Life of Plants" LP, accompanied by the National Afro-American Philharmonic Orchestra. The last part of the three hour concert has Wonder doing his more conventional recent hits. 1977 - A demonstration erupts outside a South African court as a magistrate rules no police are to blame for the death Steve Biko of the leader of the black consciousness movement. 1972 - Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" is released. 1971 - Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujeira, Sharjah & Umm ak Qiwain form United Arab Emirates 1969 - Major Nelson marries Jeannie on the TV show I Dream of Jeannie. 1969 - Boeing 747: The 350-500 passenger jet makes its first public flight; it flew from Seattle, Washington to New York City. 1967 - "Daydream Believer" by the Monkees topped the US charts and stayed there for 4 weeks. 1963 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: ``Dominique,'' The Singing Nun. The song is written by Sister Luc-Gabrielle and eulogizes the founder of the Dominican order. 1952 - Keeping his campaign promise, President-elect Dwight D. Eisenhower arrived in Korea to promote a settlement to end hostilities in that war-ravaged country. 1941 - Casablanca: Date of the opening scene of the classic 1942 film. 1932 - The Adventures of Charlie Chan was first heard on the NBC Blue radio network. The Chinese detective became even more popular on the movie screen in the 1930s and 1940s. 1929 - Disney's Mickey Mouse short The Haunted House is released. When Mickey takes shelter from a storm inside an old haunted house, he must play the organ for the ghost and skeleton dance. It is Mickey's first ever encounter with ghosts! 1901 - King Camp Gillette patented a safety razor with a double-edged disposable blade. 1804 - Napoleon Bonaparte crowns himself Emperor of France.
