BIRTHDAYS: 1973 - Tyra Banks - actress: Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Higher Learning – Also a former model who created the popular TV reality show America's Next Top Model. Banks was a top supermodel of the 1990s, when she became the first African-American model featured on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. 1964 - Marisa Tomei - an American stage, film and television actress. Tomei first came to prominence as a supporting cast member on The Cosby Show spinoff A Different World in 1987. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in My Cousin Vinny (1992). She received subsequent nominations for her performances in In the Bedroom (2001) and The Wrestler (2008). Her most commercially successful films to date are What Women Want (2000), Anger Management (2003) and followed by Wild Hogs (2007). She received critical acclaim for her performances in Unhook the Stars (1996), Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) and The Wrestler (2008). 1949 - Jeff Bridges - At the age of 16, Bridges writes a song that is included on the soundtrack to the 1969 film "John and Mary." He later sells two songs to Quincy Jones. Bridges has penned over 200 songs, and in late 1999 he releases his debut album, "Be Here Soon." Ronan was told his services were no longer required. Westlife had scored seven No.1 UK singles. 1998 - The remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Psycho opened in U.S. theatres. Vince Vaughn and Anne Heche starred. By 2001, the film had grossed $21.486 million in the U.S. Considering it cost $25 million plus a large marketing campaign, the bottom line is scary for this movie. The original has brought in some $16 million, but cost just $800,000 to make in 1960. 1997 – Seven Years in Tibet starring Brad Pitt, David Thewlis and B D Wong commenced screening in Australia. True story of Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountain climber who became friends with the Dalai Lama at the time of China's takeover of Tibet. 1996 - Madonna, Mariah Carey and Carlos Santana are honored with special honors at the Billboard Music Awards. Madonna receives Billboard's artist achievement award which recognizes popularity, record sales and career achievement. Carey is honored for setting a new chart record with her single "One Sweet Day," a duet with Boyz II Men. The song remains at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart for sixteen weeks. Santana wins the ultimate Billboard century award. 1996 - Mars Pathfinder lifted off from Cape Canaveral and embarked on a successful 310 million-mile trip to explore the Red Planet's surface. 1991 - Associated Press correspondent Terry Anderson was released after nearly seven years in captivity in Lebanon. 1991 – Paula Abdul is awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on this day in rock history! 1991 – Captain Mark Pyle pilots Clipper Goodwill, a Pan American World Airways Boeing 727-221ADV, to Miami International Airport ending 64 years of Pan Am operations. 1985 - "Les Miserables" opens at Palace Theatre, London 1984 - The discovery of a Bronze Age shipwreck off the southern coast of Turkey was announced by the National Geographic Society. The find dated back to when King Tutankhamen ruled Egypt. 1980 - The saga of Superman continued in Superman II starring Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman and Margot Kidder which started screening in Australia. Superman agrees to sacrifice his powers to marry Lois, unaware that three Kryptonian criminals he inadvertently released are conquering Earth. 1972 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: ``I Am Woman,'' Helen Reddy. 1971 - Don McLean's ‘American Pie’ entered the US Hot 100. The eight and a half minute song would eventually sell over 3 million copies. 1971 - Led Zeppelin started a two-week run at No.1 on the UK chart with the 'Four Symbols' album. Featuring the 8-minute track 'Stairway To Heaven', the album stayed on the US chart for 1 week short of 5 years, selling over 11 million copies. IMAGE 1965 - The Byrds started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Turn! Turn! Turn!' the group's second No.1. A No.26 hit in the UK. In a rare speaking role, Marceau was heard to deliver the memorable line, “ .” Pretty funny stuff for a mime... 1954 - "Mr. Sandman" by the Chordettes topped the charts and stayed there for 7 weeks 1945 - The Senate approved U.S. participation in the United Nations 1942 - Disney's Goofy short How to Fish, directed by Jack Kinney, is released. Goofy demonstrates how to fish ... although he's really showing us how not to fish! 1934 - Ethel Merman recorded I Get a Kick Out of You, from Cole Porter’s musical, Anything Goes. She was backed by the Johnny Green Orchestra. The tune was recorded for Brunswick Records. 1933 - Tobacco Road, a play based on Erskine Caldwell’s book, premiered at the Masque Theatre in New York City. The play ran for eight years and 3,182 shows. 1932 - “Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. North and South America and all the ships at sea. Let’s go to press!” The Walter Winchell Show, later The Jergens Journal and still later, Kaiser-Frazer News, was first heard on the NBC Blue network. Winchell kept that gossip show going on the radio for 23 years. It was sponsored at first by Jergens lotion and, later, by Dryad deodorant, Kaiser-Frazer cars and Richard Hudnut shampoo. 1927 - Duke Ellington’s big band opened the famed Cotton Club in Harlem. It was the first appearance of the Duke’s new and larger group. He played the club until 1932. 1872 - The 'Mary Celeste' is found abandoned, with its cargo intact, but no sign of its crew or passengers.
