Russell Crowe is apparently the front-runner for the male lead in the latest remake of "A Star Is Born" over at Warner Bros. Pictures says The LA Times.

If formally offered and accepted, Crowe would play an alcoholic musician who mentors a rising female star and the pair begin a romance. The female role has yet to be cast but Beyonce Knowles is likely to star as the singer/actress has long been linked with the role.

Will Fetters is the most recent screenwriter attached to the project, which has seen numerous drafts. "The Notebook" director Nick Cassavetes recently entered talks to direct.

The film would mark the fourth film version of the property. Previous incarnations were released in 1937 with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason, and 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.
