MOVIE TRIVIA …

MAE WEST

As well as performing, Mae West was a director, playwright and novelist.

Her first play Sex (1926) was considered so shocking that it led to her imprisonment on obscenity charges.

She followed it with The Drag (1927) – a play about homosexuals which was banned from Broadway but found a receptive audience in nearby Paterson, New Jersey.

Diamond Lil (1928) finally brought her Broadway success.

West went on to write a number of other plays and novels whose unflinching treatment of challenging social and sexual themes have keep them in print.
