ADAMS TO PLAY JOPLIN

Actress Amy Adams has been cast as bisexual rock legend Janis Joplin in a forthcoming film biography, reports Nikki Finke of the blog Deadline.com.

Adams, known for playing sweet-natured, sincere characters such as in her Oscar-nominated turns in Junebug and Doubt, seems an unlikely choice for the hard living Joplin who died on a heroin overdose in 1971.

Finke quotes an interview with Twilight producer Wyck Godfrey on website Fearnet, in which he mentions the long-in-the-works biopic of Joplin. According to Finke acclaimed City of God director Fernando Meirelles will helm the production, which currently has no studio involvement.

Over the years actresses Zooey Deschanel, Renee Zellweger, and Brittany Murphy as well as pop star Pink have been attached to various film projects about the fabled rock star. Bette Midler received an Academy Award nomination for her 1978 film debut in The Rose, widely considered a thinly veiled portrait of Joplin.
