AFI AWARD TO MORGAN FREEMAN

The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced it's 39th LIfetime Achievement Award is to be presented to Morgan Freeman.

Freeman will become the second African American to receive the award, with Sidney Poitier, receiving the award in 1992.

Howard Stringer, chairman of the AFI Board of Trustees said :

“Morgan Freeman is an American treasure.  Across decades, whether playing a prisoner, a president or God, he embodies a calm authority that demands respect for the character and for the art form. His gifts to the cultural record are also underscored by his unmistakable voice that echoes through the hearts and minds of movie lovers around the world."

Freeman's has receieved Oscar nominations for his roles in The Shawshank Redemption, Driving Miss Daisy, Street Smart, and Invictus.

His lone Oscar win was for his supporting role in Million Dollar Baby, in 2004.

Previous winners of the award include Alfred Hitchcock, Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, and Meryl Streep.
