Humpback whales hold the migration record. They have been found to migrate from their feeding grounds in the Antarctic to Costa Rica. ten degrees north of the equator, a distance of more than 5,000 miles (8,000 kms).
The cold Antarctic Ocean is rich in the tiny shrimp-like krill on which the 40 metric-ton whales feed, but they need warmer water for breeding.
