LANGUAGE TRIVIA ... BOWDLERIZE

 

Thomas Bowdler (1754 -1825) was a London doctor who took it upon himself to prudishly edit the works of Shakespeare. This was a 10 volume undertaking which ‘those words and expressions are omitted which can not with propriety be read aloud in a family’. Dr Bowdler did the same with Gibbon’s Decline and fall of the Roman Empire.
