LANGUAGE TRIVIA ... DUNCE

 

John Duns Scotus (c1265-1308) was a Scottish philosopher and one of the most significant theologians of the Middle Ages. He was anything but a dunce in the modern sense, but adversaries referred to his followers despairingly as ‘Dunses’ for their hair-splitting pedantry.
