Samuel Maverick (1803-1870) was an early Texan settler of independent disposition. His cattle ventures ended with large numbers of unbranded livestock wandering the range freely. Neighbours called all the unbranded cattle ‘mavericks’ and the name stuck with the Texan cowboys.
