John Mantagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792). The Sandwich Islands were named after him by Captain Cook. Lord Sandwich was the First Lord of the Admiralty from 1748-1751. He was an inveterate gambler and used to chew on a slice of meat between two slices of bread as he sat at the gambling table – hence the ‘sandwich’.
