TRIVIA BITS … GREAT BARRIER REEF

Several species that live on the Great Barrier Reef are highly poisonous.

The tentacles of the pale blue box jellyfish can inflict a sting that causes such excruciating pain that swimmers have been known to go into shock and drown before they reach help.

The sting of the tiny irukandji jellyfish produces intense muscle pain and nausea and can be fatal. The lion fish, the stone fish and stingray all have venomous spines.
