The first Allied troops to enter Damascus upon its ‘liberation’ from ottoman rule were the forces of the Arab Revolt under the leadership of Emir Faisal. The principal British officer in their ranks was T. E. Lawrence better known as Lawrence of Arabia. He recounted his adventure in the book ‘The Seven Pillars of Wisdom’.
