During World War One, Marie Curie persuaded wealthy people to donate their cars so that mobile X-ray machines could be sued to locate shrapnel and bullets in wounded soldiers. She also pioneered the use of radio-active, in the form of small tubes of radon gas, to destroy diseased tissue.
