After 1799, the metre has been redefined several times based on the wavelengths of particular parts of the light spectrum. In 1983, it was given the definition – ‘the length of light travelled by light in a vacuum during the time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second’. This requires definition of a second which is now based on the radiation properties of the caesium atom.
