In August 1954, the two sub-four-minute men met in competition at the Commonwealth Games in Vancouver. John Landy held the lead for most of the race, but on the last bend he looked back over his left shoulder to check Roger Bannister’s position and the Briton passed him on the right to win with a time of 3 minutes 58.8 seconds. 0.8 seconds ahead of Landy.
