TRIVIA BITS …WATER FREEZING

 

It’s fortunate for life on Earth that ice is less dense than liquid water. The surface of a lake freezes in winter because of the cold air above it with the ice layer effectively insulating the water below. If water were to contract when it becomes solid, like most substances do, the forming ice would continuously sink to the bottom, cooking the depths and causing the lake to freeze from the bottom up potentially killing all the life in it.
