What's in a name? Comic fanatic Nicolas Cage took his obsession a step further than most, when he named his son after Superman's birth name, Kal-El. It's not the first time that the actor has honoured his fanaticism with a name - he changed his surname Coppola to Cage in honour of Marvel character Luke Cage.

 

HOPPER JACK PENN

What's in a name? Sean Penn and then wife Robin named their son Hopper Jack in honour of family friends - and acting legends - Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson.

What's in a name? My Name is Earl leading man Jason Lee and Beth Riesgraf chose this unusual name for their son in honour of song He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot by rock band Grandaddy.

What's in a name? Sylvester Stallone perhaps was honouring his action man career when he and wife Sasha Czack gave their son the moniker Sage Moonblood.

What's in a name? Actress Shannyn Sossamon and partner Dallas Clayton named their son Audio Science, explaining later that they wanted a 'word not a name'. The actress commented, 'my boyfriend read through the dictionary three or four times. We were going to call him Science, but thought it might get shortened to Sci, as in Simon.'

What's in a name? Rachel Griffiths and her Australian artist husband gave their son the musical moniker Banjo - although it had nothing to do with the stringed instrument. He was actually named after writer Banjo A.B. Paterson. 'He's the famous Australian poet, journalist and storyteller,' explained Rachel. 'He wrote the song 'Waltzing Matilda.'

What's in a name? Satchel - son of Woody Allen and Mia Farrow - was clearly unimpressed by his name, inspired by Satchel Paige, and is now known as Ronan Seamus.

What's in a name? It's no surprise that Katie Price and Peter Andre crated the name Tiaamii for their daughter, Princess - it's taken from their mother's names,Thea and Amy.

What's in name? U2's The Edge and his then wife Aislinn O'Sullivan named their third daughter Blue Angel in 1989, a sister for Hollie and Arran. His only dabbling in the stranger side of naming, the rocker named subsequent children, with second wife Morleigh Steinberg, Sian and Levi.

What's in a name? Jermaine Jackson seems to be fond of the letter J - having 6 children whose names begin with the same letter. But he saved the strangest for his youngest - son Jermajesty Jackson - who was born in 2000 to his ex-wife Alejandra Oaziaza.

What's in a name? Paula Yates and Michael Hutchence gave their first daughter - her fourth - the unusual title of Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily, although she was more commonly known as simply Tiger. Hiraani was apparently Michael's favourite Polynesian word, meaning 'princess of the beautiful sky.' Although born to the surname Hutchence, Tiger officially adopted the name Geldof in 2008 - the same as half-sisters, Fifi Trixibelle, Peaches & Pixie.

What's in a name? Toni Braxton appeared to have taken inspiration from the jeans section in her local department store when naming her two sons, Diezel and Denim.

What's in a name? David Duchovny and Tea Leoni's first born was given the rather conventional name of Madelaine. But they saved the more unusual name for their second child - son Kyd Miller. The now eight-year old apparently prefers to go by his middle name of Miller.

What's in a name? Ashlee Simpson and her now estranged rocker husband Pete Wentz did indeed name their child after the famous Disney character. 'The Jungle Book was something that me and Ashlee bonded over. It's a cool name,' said Pete. 'Then we came up with the idea Bronx. We'd been throwing names back and forth for a while.'

What's in a name? Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin chose the fruity moniker for their first daughter because, 'It sounded so sweet and it conjured such a lovely picture for me - you know, apples are so sweet and they're wholesome and it's biblical,' the actress later explained.
