The most successful musical ever to deal with a sport subject was a variant on the Faust legend, which had been around since The Black Crook. In this tale, a baseball enthusiast sells his soul to the devil - or Mr. Applegate— just for the chance to play ball with the Washington Senators. There is, fortunately, an escape clause, and Applegate, even aided by temptress Lola, must eventually let Joe Hardy return to his long-suffering spouse.
