After Kiss Me, Kate, Can-Can was Cole Porter’s most successful Broadway musical. To devise the story, librettist Burrows went to Paris, where he researched records of the police and Chamber of Deputies, and studied the arguments and trials of the late 1800s. The tale was concerned with the introduction of the scandalous dance known as the can-can, and the way Pastiche, owner of the Bal du Paradis, breaks down the resistance of the stern judge Aristide Forestier, who has been sent to investigate. Eventually the judge himself defends Pastiche and her can-can dancers and wins acquittal. Though Lilo was the star of the musical, it was Gwen Verdon, in her first major Broadway role, who attracted the most notice, especially with her “Garden of Eden” ballet and Apache dance.
