LANGUAGE TRIVIA … GRUESOME

There is a Scottish verb, grue, which means "to shudder or tremble with fear." So "gruesome," when it arose originally in Scottish English in the 1500s, meant literally "so horrible as to make one shudder." It would have remained strictly a Scottish word, but it was popularized by Sir Walter Scott in the early 19th century.
