MOVIE TERM ‘VAMP’

Theda_barr_a_fool_there_was_1915

The term 'vamp', meaning a sultry temptress, was coined when silent star Theda Bara played a character called The Vampire in A Fool There Was (1915), Her phoney biography stated that her name was an anagram of ‘Arab Death' and that she was the daughter of a French artist and an Egyptian princess, born in the Sahara desert. The far more prosaic truth is that she was born Theodosia Burr Goodman, daughter of a tailor, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
