MOVIE REVIEW … THE TRIP

the-trip-movie-poster-2010-1020699816Something everyone loves is food.  Television is saturated with cooking shows conjuring a recipe of humour and cuisine which have turned them into huge hits.  The Trip uses this strand as a basis for its story.  Exploring a journey of gastronomic and comedic proportions, Director Michael Winterbottom shows how a person’s personality can be conveyed through the tasty delights they consume.

Actor Steve Coogan is tasked to critique a variety of gourmet establishments within Britain’s Lake District and Yorkshire Dales.  Initially wanting to bring his girlfriend, her refusal sees him asking fellow actor Rob Brydon to join him.  Driving amongst the hills and greenery of the plains, they indulge in their favourite pastime of celebrity impersonations placating the boredom of their travels.  Over time they discover how wit and food bind them in a way neither felt possible.

Watching a film craft an off-kilter tale is something to be happy with.  The Trip does so by having Coogan and Brydon portray a version of themselves fans perceive them to be.  Where Brydon is the playful family man, Coogan is the egotistical misery shuffling around within an empty personal void.  From this context their art for mimicry disguises their conflicting personalities and the fulfilment Coogan’s persona wishes he had.

Although proceedings aren’t a laugh a minute there are some great moments.  The leads have a great time impersonating many celebrities and their sublime performances mixes comedy and pathos with skill.  The food and scenery look suitably gorgeous even if the pacing seems a bit off.  Considering The Trip is actually a cut down version of a 6 part TV series, this shouldn’t be surprising.  What it lacks in astute timing, it gains in the fine leads and interesting narrative hooks.

English film-makers seem to know how to portray stoic whimsy very well.  The Trip makes for an engaging and thoughtful journey of two disparate people going to the same places but having different outlooks on how to live life.
