REMINISCING ... RAY CHARLES

RAY CHARLES 0029AJ

Ray Charles, born as Ray Charles Robinson, later changed his name so as not to be confused with the fighter, Sugar Ray Robinson. Ironically, another boxer, Welterweight Champion Sugar Ray Leonard was christened Ray Charles Leonard after the musician.

As a teenager, Ray Charles once played with a white country band called The Florida Playboys- While playing with the group he learned to yodel.

It was Ray Charles who provided the female-sounding back upon his 1959 blues record I Believe To My Soul, the flipside of I'm Movin' On (Atlantic 2043). He wasn't satisfied with The Raeletts’ sound and overdubbed it himself.

Supposedly, Ray Charles was one of the hand clappers in the background of The Archies’ Sugar Sugar (Calendar 1008)

Jerry Reed played guitar and Glen Campbell played the mandolin on Ray Charles's version of Wichita Lineman.
