"CHRISTMAS IS MADE OF SO MANY THINGS"
by Mina Morris Scott

Christmas is made of so many things,
All lovely and gay and bright;
Fir trees and holly and mistletoe
With their odors of spicy delight.

Mysterious packages here and there,
Boxes in riotous rows,
And tinsel and tissue and cellophane,
With big puffy ribbon bows;

Christmas carols being sung,
And houses all alight,
Windows adorned with Christmas wreaths
Or gleaming with candlelight;

Mantels heaped high with greenery
Pine cones and evergreen,
Tables reverently arranged
With miniature manger scenes;

The cozy warmth of family hearths
Where the flickering firelight glows,
With big wide chimneys for Santa Claus,
And stockings hung in rows.

There are candy canes and oranges,
Apples and nuts and pie,
Christmas cookies and various kinds
Of dainties to catch the eye.

Christmas is made of so many things,
Ice and snow on the ground;
A silver moon in the midnight sky,
And sleighbells' tinkling sound.

Little white churches all aglow
And the chime of their sacred bells,
And people gathered to worship there
Where the true Christmas spirit dwells;

Christmas trees smothered in trimmings
Treasured throughout the years,
Yards of garlands of glittery strands
And colorful shiny spheres.

We load ours with decorations
Till the tree seems ready to drop,
Then we add the glistening angel
And the star at the very top.

Christmas means gaiety, laughter and fun,
Parties and grab bags galore;
Boxes arriving in the mail,
And greeting cards by the score;

Icicles hanging from the eaves,
Bright stars in the sky above,
Goodwill in our hearts toward all mankind,
And gifts for the ones we love.

Yet back of these external symbols,
These outward expressions of joy,
We find the true meaning of Christmas
In the birth of a little boy.

That Holy Child of Bethlehem,
Sent down to the earth to bless,
To guide us each and everyone
Into paths of happiness.

So we find in fullest measure now
The joy for which His grace imparts...
For the thing which really makes Christmas
Is His spirit within our hearts
