REMINISCING ... THE PLATTERS

platters05

The Platters were regular members on television’s “Jonathan Winters Show" during 1956.

The group once performed on board the nuclear submarine U.S.S. John Adams while it was submerged.

The Platters and the group Kool and the Gang have been featured together on a television beer commercial.

The Platters were given a contract with Mercury Records during 1955 only because their manager Buck Ram offered them as a throw-in with another group managed by Ram that Mercury wanted to sign. The group wanted by Mercury, was The Penguins, who had had a million-selling hit titled Earth Angel (Dootone 348). The group would never have another hit. The platters, however, subsequently had many many million-sellers for Mercury.

Zola Taylor, the female member of The Platters, previously sang with the group Shirley Gunter and The Queens, who recorded in the Flair label in the mid-1950s.
