BERGHAIN, BERLIN
A converted power station in the Friedrichshain district, the door policy is notoriously strict — best arrive early or very late, and be sure to scrub up on your conversational German — but get inside and Berghain offers a broad range of possibilities. Yes, it's huge — the dance floor is a dizzying 18 metres high – but a powerful Funktion One sound system and a party-hard crowd mean this is probably the best place in the world to lose yourself in all-night techno.
The club is located in a former power plant in Friedrichshain, behind the Berlin Ostbahnhof railway station. The building is distinguished by its enormous dimensions, which accommodate an 18 metre high dance floor and space for 1500 guests, and also its minimalist interior design, dominated by steel and concrete. The club contains a "cavernous" main room, as well as a smaller upstairs space called the Panorama Bar, which is decorated by enormous Wolfgang Tillmans photographs and tall windows with a view of East Berlin.
