Many overnight singing sensations have actually spent years paying their dues. Some singers who were disc jockeys before becoming recording artists were: B. B. King, Bill Haley, Ferlin Husky, James Brown, Jim Lowe, Johnny Tillotson, Rufus Thomas, Long John Baldry, Ike Turner, Waylon Jennings, Lee Hazelwood, J.P. Richardson, Sly Stone, Kim Weston, Bill Anderson, Terry Knight, Rick Dees, Peter Wolf, and others.

The word "disc jockey" was coined by Variety magazine during 1937.Two disc jockeys (at the time they recorded) had number-one hits: The Green Door (Dot 15486), by Jim Lowe (1956) , and Disco Duck (RSO 857) by Rick Dees (1976).
