TRIVIA BITS

  • The herring is the most widely eaten fish in the world. Nutritionally its fuel value is that equal to that of a beefsteak.
  • The highest paid odds on a horserace are 3,072,887 to 1. For a 5p accumulator bet on 5 horses, an unnamed woman won £153,644.40 (which was paid out by Ladbrokes, the world's largest bookmaker).
  • The highest scoring word in the English language game of Scrabble is 'Quartzy'. This will score 164 points if played across a red triple-word square with the Z on a light blue double-letter square. It will score 162 points if played across two pink double-word squares with the Q and the Y on those squares. 'Bezique' and 'Cazique' are next with a possible 161 points. All three words score an extra 50 points for having seven letters and therefore emptying the letter rack in one go.
  • The highjump method of jumping head first and landing on their back is called the Fosbury Flop.
  • The hippopotamus is born under water.
  • The Hollywood sign was first erected in 1923. Conceived as a real estate ad, it originally read Hollywoodland. The sign stands 50 feet tall, stretches 450 feet across, weighs 450,000 pounds.
  • The honeybee kills more people world-wide than all the poisonous snakes combined.
  • The Hoover Dam was built to last 2,000 years. The concrete in it will not even be fully cured for another 500 years.
  • The hottest chile in the world is the habanero.
  • The hottest flame known is produced with carbon subnitride (C4N2), which can generate a temperature of 4988°C.
