TRIVIA BITS 23 MAY

  • Water freezes faster if cooled quickly from a warm temperature, than it does from a cooler one. Warm water freezes faster than cold water due to lower oxygen content - but the cooling must occur quickly before the warm water naturally re-oxygenates.
  • Watermelon is grown in over 96 countries worldwide.  Over 1,200 varieties of watermelon are grown worldwide. There are about 200 varieties of watermelon throughout the US.
  • Watermelon, considered one of America's favourite fruits, is really a vegetable (Citrullus lanatus). Cousin to the cucumber and kin to the gourd, watermelons can range in size from 7 to 100 pounds.
  • Waves "break" when their height is more than seven-tenths of the depth of the water.
  • West Side Story is based on Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet.
  • Whales can't swim backwards.
  • Whales increase in weight 30,000,000,000 times in their first two years.
  • Whales must move their entire body to change their line of sight.
  • What is black, frozen and measures 3 inches by 1 inches? An ice-hockey puck.
  • Wheat is the world's most widely cultivated plant; grown on every continent except Antarctica.
