Union Station is the grand ceremonial train station designed to be the entrance to Washington, D.C., when it opened on October 27, 1907.
Washington Union Station is a train station and leisure destination visited by 32 million people each year in the centre of Washington, D.C. It is one of the busiest and best-known places in Washington, D.C.
The train station is served by Amtrak, MARC and Virginia Railway Express commuter rail services as well as by Washington Metro subway trains and local buses. It opened in 1907 and at its height during World War II some 200,000 people passed through it every day. It is also the headquarters for Amtrak.
On October 27, 1907, Union Station officially opened at 6:50 a.m., when the Baltimore and Ohio Pittsburgh Express pulled into the Station. The Station was ultimately completed in 1908.
There are more than 35 establishments offering international cuisine and six full service restaurants: America, B. Smith's, Centre Cafe, East Street Cafe, Pizzeria Uno, The Station Grill and Thunder Grill.
Union Station also offers a multitude of services including shoe repair, a pharmacy, car rental services, florist, 24-hour automatic teller machines, photo processing, gourmet delicatessen, and foreign currency exchange.
Washington’s Union Station has featured as a location in numerous movies, not all as memorable as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Others include Strangers on a Train, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (where it is partially destroyed), Hannibal, The Recruit, Along Came a Spider, Collateral Damage, The Sentinel, My Fellow Americans, and Wedding Crashers.
