As inevitable as Christmas itself, dozens of artists in every style release collections of favourite holiday songs in the last quarter of each year. Invariably they draw on well-known material, presented in the style associated with each title. Surprises are rare, the goal being to fulfil everyone's preconceptions of snowy sleigh rides and cozy firesides.
Colbie Caillat loves the old songs as much as anyone, but with Christmas in the Sand she stands the formula on its head, with delightful results. With high-profile guests contributing to the holiday spirit, from Brad Paisley’s fiery pickin‘ and singing to Gavin DeGraw’s playful/soulful vocals, this music is as varied as it is tuneful and rich in spirit.
"The concept of this record is that not everyone has Christmas in the snow, where they're bundled up and sitting by the fire," she says. "I'm from Southern California and I go to Hawaii all the time, and people there sometimes spend Christmas on the beach in their bathing suits."
But Caillat is no stranger to wintry wonder. "Most of my Christmases have been at my grandparents' house in Lake Tahoe Nevada, where it's always a white Christmas," she points out. "We make snow angels and have hot chocolate and sit by the fire and listen to Nat 'King' Cole and open presents under the tree. So I wanted to have both perspectives."
In these varied settings, the two-time Grammy Award winner can reflect on the many contexts of Christmas – not just geographical but emotional as well, weaving the season into tales of love and loneliness, playfulness and awareness of the less fortunate among us.
