Seminal jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck died of heart failure on his way to a cardiology appointment yesterday. He passed on the eve of his 92 birthday.
The ultracool Dave Brubeck Quartet’s 1959 album Time Out was the first-ever million-selling jazz record, and still mesmerizes today with its unique and fanciful rhythms. Brilliant cuts like “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo a la Turk” remain classics. In 1954, Brubeck was the first modern jazz musician to be pictured on the cover of Time.
