Movie Review ... Red Dawn

red-dawn-movie-poster-2012A remake of the 1984 original starring Patrick Swayze, ‘Red Dawn’ may seem familiar.  Local audiences had a recent taste with ‘Tomorrow, When the War Began’ which had the same basic premise.  Both managed to wring some compelling moments from a story initially basing itself on Cold War-era paranoia.  Sadly this remake fails to pass muster with its battalion of gorgeous looking heroes no match for the gritty atmosphere of its predecessors.

Jed (Chris Hemsworth) returns to his hometown after a military tour of duty.  Re-connecting with his brother Matt (Josh Peck) and friends, he looks forward to some well-earned rest.   This never eventuates after his town is invaded by Korean soldiers.  Amazed at the audacity of the invasion, Jed determines to repel the attack.  Along with others, he sets out to free innocent captors with any and all means at his disposal.

‘Red Dawn’ typifies a current trend of remakes adding little to its forebear.  Where the original had something to say about taking up arms and war’s meaning, this remake discards any thoughtful notions.  Massive explosions instead replace it with the ensuing carnage mercifully masking some of the appalling dialogue.  Its plot moves in various angles without any genuine focus with the blame going to the script-writers and Dan Bradley’s uninspired direction.

The fact this stayed on the shelf for nearly 3 years says something about its quality.  Unfortunately for Hemsworth – who has made a name for himself since filming this – one of his first Hollywood roles is pretty dire.  The same can be said for his co-stars who deliver their lines with all the emotion of a performer on a teenage soap opera.  What are left to admire are the action sequences which are well handled with the rest of the production less than brilliant.

This is a very forgettable movie with not much recommending it.  By the numbers revelling in its banality ‘Red Dawn’ is a poor substitute to an original that deserves to be re-watched more than this limp re-tread.
