Movie Review ... The Bourne Legacy

the-bourne-legacy-movie-posterHollywood has never let a star’s departure end a franchise.  James Bond, Tarzan and many others have continued long after the original leads’ exit.  The Bourne Legacy continues this revolving door with a new hero entering the fray.  Jeremy Renner gamely fills the role left vacant by Matt Damon with an old tale’s fresh angle reviving a usually exciting action series.

After Jason Bourne exposes the CIA’s various black ops programs, all hell breaks loose.  When his fellow co-workers are targeted during the ensuing investigation CIA Director Kramer (Scott Glenn) calls on Colonel Byer (Edward Norton) for help.  Charged with eradicating any trace of their various illegal operations Byer aims to eliminate any agents involved.  One being Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) who, with the help of Dr. Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz), embarks on a dangerous journey with death lurking around every corner.

The fourth in the series, ‘The Bourne Legacy’ tries hard in emulating its forebear’s success.  It only moderately achieves this with the dazzling action sequences being its best asset.  These scenes enliven an otherwise slow moving and mundane film with the biggest problem being the lead characters.  Despite Renner’s and Weisz’s best efforts their roles just aren’t interesting.  They lack the determined drive Damon conveyed with both having little to work with.

Tony Gilroy’s direction also fails to deliver a tighter narrative.  Where previous entries had complex characters framed around a fairly simple plot the reverse is true for ‘Legacy’.  It’s a shame the story is so muddled as occasionally it has some intriguing moments.  Gilroy ensures there is a satisfying global sweep however ensuring viewers understand the wide-reaching nature of the villain’s skulduggery.

‘The Bourne Legacy’ is an overly long yarn showing infrequent signs of life.  When it does it reveals what made the series captivating with the inevitable fifth instalment hopefully building on its successes.
