Movie Review ... Jack Reacher

jack-reacher-posterWhatever can be said of Tom Cruise, he sure loves action movies.  This would explain why he’s done so many with most becoming huge hits.  ‘Jack Reacher’ is his current foray in explosive incident.  Based on thriller writer Lee Child’s successful books, the character seems to perfectly fit Cruise’s established screen image.  While he may not stretch himself as an actor, his reliability in conveying an ‘everyman’ persona keeps him in good stead in this enjoyable if routine yarn.

When arrested on a false charge, Jack Reacher’s (Tom Cruise) help is requested.  A former army military police officer drifting through life, Reacher’s sense of justice can be an acquired taste. Freely working outside the law, he aims to uncover his friend’s involvement in a series of killings.  With determined lawyer Helen (Rosamund Pike) helping from the side-lines, Reacher proves why he is never to be messed with as the one man army goes to war.

‘Jack Reacher’ plays very much like the dozens of police procedurals filling TV screens.  You can’t blame Child for jumping on this bandwagon as many such shows have proven popular.  Perhaps the script seems a little mundane for cinema screens.  Whilst having an abundance of thrills and action, one has a sense of déjà vu watching them.  Not that what’s on offer isn’t diverting as Director Christopher McQuarrie helms this expensive time-waster with skill.

McQuarrie is well served by a strong cast attempting to flesh out their fairly clichéd roles.  Cruise and Pike make for a formidable duo with Robert Duvall’s supporting role as an ex-army sharp-shooter a nice addition.  They equip themselves admirably in the many stunts, shoot-outs and chases which cover for the overly long run-time.  Seasoned crime-watchers may guess where the story leads although there is fun to be had in reaching the conclusion.

‘Jack Reacher’ isn’t a cinematic world beater although it’s serviceable enough.  It appears Cruise may have another franchise to fall back on between other projects although hopefully the next instalment will have more of the excitement missing here.
