Movie Review ... Kath & Kimderella

kath_and_kimderella_poster‘Kath and Kimderella’ is a rarity among the ‘TV to movie’ genre.  It actually hits its’ comedic targets despite the less than fantastic strike rate small screen comedies have in moving to cinemas.  Credit goes to the writers and director Ted Emery who maintains the essence of what initially made ‘Kath & Kim’ such a hit TV series.  The humour may occasionally be obvious and the plot is beyond silly but it has a sense of fun making for a diverting time spent with Fountain Lake’s hottest foxy ladies.

Winning a trip to Italy bored house-wife Kath Day-Knight (Jane Turner) is delighted.  Taking her daughter Kim (Gina Riley) and her best friend Sharon (Madga Szubanski) they dream of a fairy-tale holiday.  Bidding farewell to their significant others Kel (Glenn Robbins) and Brett (Peter Rowsthorn), their trip is filled with surprises.  Featuring royalty and garish frocks the holiday-makers set out to show the world how some Aussie sheilas can be pure class.

Taking a huge risk in featuring its usually suburban characters in an overseas setting ‘Kath and Kimderella’ mostly succeeds.  This is due to the enthusiastic performances with all having a grand time.  From the central cast to new additions such as Rob Sitch and Richard E Grant, they make the most of the gloriously shot Italian locale.  The screenplay doesn’t have any deep meaning – just an energetic glee in playing with comedic conventions.

At ninety minutes it manages not to out-stay its welcome.  Occasionally the pacing sags and some jokes don’t work but when they do ‘Kath and Kimderella’ shows true inspiration.  These sequences prove much effort was made in being funny instead of relying on cheap bodily function gags.  It’s nice seeing genuine wit amongst the expected visual humour never straying from what made the series so popular.

‘Kath & Kim’ devotees should delight in their big screen debut.  Over the top but consistently amusing it’s not unreasonable to assume Fountain Lakes’ finest will return to cinemas again in their own strikingly fashionable style.
