The Great Gatsby is closing in on Moulin Rouge's spot as the fifth highest earner of all time at the Australian box office.

Luhrmann has an extraordinary four films in the Top 10 starting with Australia, which took a whopping $37.6 million and the No 2 spot (behind Crocodile Dundee with $47.7 million) when it was released in 2008.

Moulin Rouge is holding on to the No 5 position - just - with a $27.7 million tally. Gatsby's total after last weekend figures were added to the mix was a $27.4 million.

After 10 weeks in release, and losing momentum, Gatsby is now unlikely to overtake its musical predecessor, which starred Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman.

In terms of value for money, Strictly Ballroom can dance rings around all of them. Made for an estimated budget of $3 million, Luhrmann's debut feature has the No 8 spot with a box office tally of $21.7 million.

George Miller has two films in the Top 10 - Babe: The Gallant Pig (which Chris Noonan directed but Miller produced) and Happy Feet.

Two Crocodile Dundee films also make the list - Crocodile Dundee II at No 6 - but the Paul Hogan vehicles were helmed by different directors - Peter Faiman and John Cornell respectively.

Rounding out the Australian Top 10 of all time are Red Dog, which nipped closely at Ballroom's heels with a $21.5 million box office total - and The Dish, which took almost $18 million.
