At last the end of winter is on the horizon for Australia. Come September 1 and it is spring. The cold wintry days will be past with days becoming warmer and longer in length of daylight.

It is time to start preparation for the much longer scorching summer days. Time to take stock of equipment and practices for these longed for days.

Here’s a check list:

  • Sunglasses
  • UV Protective clothing
  • Sunscreens – check the existing expiry dates of current sunscreen
  • Hats
  • Pop-up sun shelters
  • Swim Goggles
  • Marquees for those beach parties
  • Umbrellas
  • Cosmetics with sun protection

For Australians, the main source of Vitamin D is from exposure to the sun. But how much time in the sun is needed to reach adequate vitamin D levels? To get enough sunlight to produce Vitamin D, a person needs to expose arms, hands and face to sunlight for about 6 –8 minutes on most days. This is best done as a part of daily living just before 10am or after 3pm in summer especially for fair people.

This would produce about 1,000IU of vitamin D. During winter longer exposures around noon would be needed in southern parts of Australia.
