  • The Australian National Portrait Gallery was founded by Gordon and Marilyn Darling in Canberra in 1992.
  • The first recorded use of the abbreviation OMG is believed to have been in a letter to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
  • The Australian national association football team represents Australia in international association football competitions. Its official nickname is the "Socceroos". The team is controlled by Football Federation Australia (FFA), which is currently a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and also an invitee member of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) since 2006. In 2012 it agreed to compete in the East Asian Football Federation East Asian Football Championship.
  • Alice Springs in the Northern Territory is home to the Australian National Road Transport of Fame.
  • Australian singer John Farnham recorded the hit song You’re the Voice for his 1986 album Whispering Jack.
  • Queen Elizabeth II refused to grant permission for her sister Princess Margaret to marry Peter Townsend in 1955.
  • US musician Frank Zappa performed with a band called The Mothers of Invention.
  • In the US city of San Francisco the Beatles performed their last public concert on 29 August 1966 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California.
  • Stobie Poles are the patented Adelaide steel and concrete power poles used throughout South Australia.
  • Hong Kong used to be a fishing village that is now home to 7 million people who dwell in a space smaller than New York's Manhattan district. It also has the largest number of skyscrapers in the world with an astounding 8000 buildings higher than 14 floors.
