International March for Elephants 04 October

 

 

The International March for Elephants has been organised by The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) through their iworry campaign and will be taking place in 15 cities across the globe in the single largest demonstration of awareness for the species.

The ivory trade is an international problem and one which must be recognized by Governments worldwide if there are to be any changes.

Join your local city March and stand in solidarity with elephants.

The peaceful marches will be concluding at Government Buildings where letters carrying the voice of thousands of people will be handed over, calling for stricter penalties and urgent global change.

50th Anniversary Doctor Who Screens World Wide

 

The 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who will be broadcast simultaneously in more than 70 countries.

The Day of the Doctor, which will star the current Doctor Matt Smith and his predecessor David Tennant, will also be shown in more than 200 UK cinemas.

So far TV networks in 75 countries have agreed to air the show on 23 November.

Les Miserables Tops UK Soundtracks List

Music from the Oscar-winning film Les Miserables has topped a list of the most popular soundtracks in the UK.

Sales of its soundtrack assisted in soundtrack sales rising 50% on 2012 to £1.7 million.

Digital sales of soundtracks were the highest of any genre in the albums market, according to figures from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

The top 5 Albums in the UK are:

Movie Review ... Oz The Great And Powerful

 

When making a prequel/sequel to a beloved movie film-makers have a choice.  They can either maintain its spirit and update it with a modern sensibility or slavishly copy its template with little flair.  ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ slides somewhere between with director Sam Raimi doing his best to adhere to L. Frank Baum’s still enchanting books.  Providing a dazzling spectacle, this visit to Oz is generally welcome even if its yellow brick road is paved with some mis-steps.

Making a living as a circus magician, Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is a man of dubious disposition.  Suddenly transported to the colourful world of Oz, he thinks he’s found a haven of riches.  He meets witches Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams).  Mistaken for a great wizard, Oscar soon becomes involved in Oz’s many dramas.  Using tricks to amaze its inhabitants, he soon learns the true nature of good and evil is something worth discovering.

‘Oz’ certainly doesn’t skimp on the special effects as it gloriously brings the magical kingdom to life.  Raimi has the most fun in creating a world many can engage in.  The same can’t be said of the overall story even though the cast give fine performances.  It is difficult becoming involved in the character’s journeys as the screenplay’s use of modern cynicism robs it of charm.  The timeless innocence of the original ‘Wizard of Oz’ is missing, replaced with characters difficult to like.

Although determined to provide something ‘worthy and earnest’ to appeal to jaded viewers, ‘Oz’ manages to occasionally entertain.  Oscar’s transformation into Oz’s wonderful wizard is believably handled with his carnival background well utilised in the exciting finale.  Franco’s role succeeds in having attention given to it unlike others who are given short shrift.  This lessens their impact with the lack of imagination in providing something new whilst maintaining the classic elements noticeable.

‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ is an ok time-waster.  Unlike the Judy Garland classic, it most likely won’t be as fondly remembered as its more adult approach in telling a beguiling fantasy lacks the shiny magical spark of Dorothy’s famous ruby slippers.

Angelina Jolie in Australia to Direct Unbroken

 

Unbroken, a World War II drama marking Angelina Jolie's second foray behind the camera will be shot in Australia. Angelina and family have been in Australia for the last few weeks scouting for outdoor locations.

The actress and director will shoot Unbroken in Sydney and parts of rural New South Wales.

Based on the book by Laura Hillenbrand, Unbroken tells of Louis Zamperini an Olympian runner turned bombardier who spent two years as a prisoner of war after being shot down in the Pacific.

Jack O'Connell will play Zamperini in a cast that also includes Garrett Hedlund and Domhnall Gleeson.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, filming will start on 21 October at Sydney's Fox Studios Australia and the Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast.

Unbroken is scheduled for release in the US on 25 December 2014.
