Lord Hopetoun 

On January 1 1901 the new Commonwealth of Australia began with the proclamation of the Federal Constitution and the swearing in of Lord Hopetoun (pictured) at Sydney's Centennial Park with NSW Protectionist leader, Edmund Barton, leading the first Commonwealth Ministry.
