CHARLIE MCCARTHY
In 1938 Northwestern University conferred an Honorary Degree on a dummy of the wooden variety – on ventriloquist Edgar Bergen’s dummy Charlie McCarthy.
The honorary degree was "Master of Innuendo and Snappy Comeback". Edgar Bergen was an alumnus of the University.
