TRIVIA BITS …

MASON-DIXON LINE

The Mason-Dixon Line was established between 1763 and 1767 to settle a long-standing boundary dispute.

The 233-mile line was surveyed by two Englishmen, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, at the request of heirs of William Penn and Lord Baltimore, to settle the old dispute over the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland when the original territories were founded.

The term was first used in the 1820 congressional debates leading to the Missouri Compromise, and in the pre-Civil War period came to refer to the dividing line between the North (free states) and the South (slave states).
