A believer in reincarnation, Pythagoras advocated vegetarianism as he believed that souls transmigrated between animals and humans in a process of purification. His followers were only permitted to eat meat that had first been ritually sacrificed to the gods. He was said – centuries later – to have sacrificed oxen in honour of “his theorem”.
