Harry Potter has conjured up a tidy sum from the first overseas debuts of his final film on its way to a potentially record-shattering opening weekend.

Distributor Warner Bros says Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 took in $US43.6 million ($A40.79 million) in 26 countries outside the United States on its first day on Wednesday.

Studio executives said on Thursday the franchise finale had the biggest opening day ever in several countries, including Australia with $US7.5 million ($A7.02 million), Italy with $US4.6 million ($A4.3 million) and Sweden with $US2.1 million ($A1.96 million). In France, the studio said Deathly Hallows: Part 2 had the biggest Wednesday opening ever at $US7.1 million ($A6.64 million).

In Australia, the eighth and final movie based on JK Rowling's seven hugely successful books raked in $7,029,487 across the country on Wednesday, almost two million dollars more than the previous record set in 2003 by The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King. The film opened on 753 screens, the widest number in Australian history.

In the countries where Deathly Hallows opened on Wednesday, total revenues were 82 per cent higher than they were on the first day for Deathly Hallows: Part 1 last November, according to Warner Bros.
